Strong and Growing Since 1779
Inside Hardin County lies one of the most historic of Kentucky’s towns. Affectionately referred to as “E-Town” by locals, Elizabethtown was legally established on July 4, 1797. During the Civil War, Federal troops were fired upon by the Confederacy at the Elizabethtown City Cemetery. To this day, a cannonball from the attack remains lodged in the wall of one of the buildings in the town’s Public Square. Further strengthening the bond between the community today and its past, from June to September, the downtown area holds a costumed walking tour. Launching it into the national spotlight, it was the setting of the 2005 movie Elizabethtown, written and directed by Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous). With numerous festivals and events spread out year-round, Elizabethtown stands as a town that not only embraces its history, but is proud of its people and the direction they are heading in the future.
