Located near the famous Cumberland Gap, is the town of Middlesboro, Kentucky. Known for its rich coal heritage, Middlesboro is home to the Coal House. The “Gap” is an 800 foot deep natural break in the Cumberland Mountains. Down the road from the historic park you will find the Cumberland Gap Tunnel. This twin-bore 4,600 foot tunnel that passes under the Cumberland Gap has been named one of the most unique tunnels in the world.
Middlesboro is also home to the Middlesboro Country Club. Founded in 1889, it is the oldest regularly played 9-hole golf course in the nation.
Geologist believe that the Middlesboro basin between Pine Mountain and the Cumberland Mountains is the remains of an ancient meteor crater, which gives the town the rare distinction of being the only city in the world built inside a crater.
