A Proud City with a History of Great Achievement
From being host to Indian tribes and pioneers to being burned by Southern General John Hunt Morgan during the Civil War, Olive Hill has a vivid history every bit as intriguing as the most celebrated of American cities. Initially named Oliver Hill in tribute to Thomas Oliver, the name later changed officially to Olive Hill due to regular mis-pronunciation. During the first Friday in June, July, and August, its citizens and guests are treated to a movie free of charge shown under the stars along the side of one of the town’s historic buildings. A festival just as fun and colorful as its name, the Annual Poppy Mountain 3rd Time Out Bluegrass Festival is held during the third week in September.
