Hometown Snapshot Shelbyville, Kentucky
Small-town Friendliness Just Miles from the 'Big City'

Shelbyville is most famous for being the birthplace of Colonel Sanders’ Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe. Colonel Sanders perfected his famed chicken recipe inside the walls of the Claudia Sanders Dinner House. The Claudia Sanders Dinner House is a 24,000 square foot dinner house that can seat up to 700 hungry guests. Often referred to as “The Gateway to the Bluegrass,” Shelbyville, Kentucky is rich in culture, history and industry. Founded in 1792 and named for Isaac Shelby, Shelbyville is now home to many beautiful recreational parks, pristine lakes, and a small town atmosphere. Located in Shelbyville is Red Orchard Park, a 131 acre park which got its name from an orchard planted around 1792 by Aquilla Whitaker, a Shelby County settler. Visitors can take in the beauty of the wildlife and 20 acres of pristine waters at the Lake Shelby Camp Ground. Lake Shelby was built in 1949 and is owned by the city. The lake is stocked with bluegill, crappie, bass, catfish and offers paddle boats, canoes and row boats for recreation. The camp ground at Lake Shelby has R.V and tent site camping with public grills and showers nearby. Minutes away, in Frankfort, Kentucky, is the birthplace of world renowned Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The James B. Beam Distilling company of Frankfort produces Jim Beam, what many consider the “world’s finest bourbon.” At 214 years old, Jim Beam is one of the world’s oldest distillers as well. Visitors can tour and learn more about this famed distillery year round by making an appointment.
